Background
On June the 1st, 2007, a new EU regulation concerning chemicals came into force, REACH – Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of CHemicals.

REACH is an EU regulation that largely replaces the Swedish laws in the sector of chemicals. The different parts of REACH will come into effect at different times, so it is important that everybody that handles chemicals is educated as to what the rules mean and when they are coming into force.
REACH and Lahega
Lahega Kemi AB has put together a working group to ensure that the work with REACH will involve the whole company. The working group has representatives from all departments. The aim is to ensure that all chemicals that are in the products we sell, and that are included in REACH, will be registered for the right area of use. The working group is communicating with and informing both suppliers and customers as well as end users.
An important part of our work with REACH is to identify which chemicals are used in our business. We have for several years in our environmental and product development work, been using a classification list for all our raw materials. Several parameters are listed there, such as the rate of degrading, toxicity, nitrification inhibition, volumes etc.
Our early involvement with REACH means that we as a supplier of chemical products are up-to-date with the EU regulations and will comply with them as they come into force. This will help and simplify your work with REACH.

More about REACH
REACH has been adopted to:
• Improve the security to the health of people and the environment when using chemical substances.
• Increase knowledge about the chemical substances that are used.
• Increase accessibility to knowledge about the substances, which in turn will lead to fewer animal trials.
• Place the responsibility for the calculation of risks to people and the environment on the companies that manufacture, import and sell the substances. Previously a lot of this responsibility lay with the authorities, but REACH will now be giving them the role of supervision instead. Previously in Sweden, the formal responsibility also lay with the companies.
• To increase the exchange of information between manufacturers, importers and suppliers as well as the users of substances and chemical products, so that the protective measures that are recommended are effective and adapted to different ways of use.
• The same rules for substances and chemical products are to be used all over the EU. This means that substances and chemicals have free movement, and this should benefit innovation and development.
